Definition For Turnkey Ecommerce

November 3, 2009 by FWB Editor

“Turnkey” is a visual image; just picture getting the key to a car, inserting the key, and having it start up.  Outside of imagery, when a person uses the term “Turnkey”, it is quite likely that what they are referring to is something that is made for instant use (generally used in the sale or a supply of services and/or goods).  A few common examples would be a “turnkey” house which is completely built and set to be lived in (having everything from the construction to the cabinets and carpeting being finished), and another being a “turnkey” business where contracted 3rd parties are used to set up necessary equipment or certain locations (for example the train or the rail lines) and putting them into operation, after which they turn it over to the owner. If that term is continued to be used, a turnkey ecommerce site is when a new ecommerce site is wholly created by a contracted 3rd party who then will return the completed site to the purchaser.  For a site to qualify as a true turnkey ecommerce site, it must have , from the moment it is turned over to the owner, a ready to go admin section (the backend) which allows customizable changes and updates  (ie products, pictures, text, categories, subcategories, ect) to show up on the main site (the front end).  In essence, you as the owner need to have total control of the site from the very beginning in order to qualify as a turnkey ecommerce site. So, as an example, lets say want to have a ecommerce site imitating a more famous ecommerce site such as IWOOT.com (without stealing the site’s layout or format of course!).  In this case, you could locate a turnkey ecommerce provider, inform them as to what your needs are (with some helpful examples), have them set up the site as per your specifications, pay them, and receive the proverbial keys for your very own ecommerce site ready to sell your products to the world at large.  You can get them to help you to create a unique url and a domain hosting service for usually a small fee (when it is not included) if you need it. Seeing as the ecommerce field is a savagely competitive one, it might not be wise if you go for the DIY ecommerce site.  Finding and hiring a capable maker of turnkey sites is the fastest and easiest way for those interested in going into ecommerce.
